SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women's tennis squad cruised to a 6-0 victory against Midwestern State in Friday's season opener for both squads at the UTSA Tennis Center.
The Roadrunners (1-0) swept all three doubles tilts to win the opening session.
Juniors Natalie Hand and Kavya Menon rolled to an 8-4 win against Taylor Coffman and Lindsey Buenger at the No. 3 spot to set the tone. Shortly thereafter, senior Stefanie Peana and sophomore Isabelle Jonsson completed an 8-5 comeback triumph over Rozike Janzen van Rensburg and Kendra Casey at the top spot to clinch the point.
The Roadrunners then earned the doubles sweep after senior Micaela Silva and junior Vivian Carrillo held off a late charge from Lindsey Holcomb and Sarita Adhikary for an 8-7 (7-5) victory at the No. 2 spot.
UTSA kept rolling in singles play and took a 3-0 lead after Jonsson and Silva both recorded 6-3, 6-1 wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots.
Freshman Irene Gandara Gonzalez clinched the victory with a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Lindsey Buenger at the sixth position.
Peana and Menon followed with back-to-back straight-set victories at Nos. 1 and 4.
Hand held a one-set lead over Taylor Coffman at fifth singles when the match was called.
UTSA will return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday when it hosts Laredo Community College.
