SAN ANTONIO — UT Arlington scored five unanswered runs in the final three frames and the Mavericks topped UTSA, 10-5, on Friday night at Roadrunner Field.
The Roadrunners (14-20, 5-11 SLC) plated four runs in the fifth inning, but they failed to score the rest of the way.
Meanwhile, UT Arlington (22-13, 9-7 SLC) crossed home twice in the seventh, once in the eighth and two more times in the final frame to pull away.
Right-hander Lance Day (7-1) settled down following the Birds' fifth-inning rally and held UTSA scoreless over the next 2.2 stanzas before handing the ball to the bullpen. Day allowed five runs (four earned), scattered 13 hits and fanned four.
Adam Boydston entered in the eighth and retired four of the five final hitters he faced to earn his third save of the spring.
The Mavericks opened the scoring in the second with a pair of runs on two run-scoring singles with two outs.
Sophomore RJ Perucki helped the Roadrunners slash the deficit in half with an infield single in the bottom half of the panel, which was prolonged after a fielding error.
Three frames later, UTA scored three times, including an RBI double by Preston Beck, to increase its lead to 5-1.
However, the Birds answered with four tallies in the home half of the fifth.
After the first two batters reached, senior Matthew James drove in classmate Casey Selsor with a sacrifice fly to left and, three batters later, junior Daniel Rockett dropped a double into right field that allowed freshman Justin Anderson to score. Sophomore John Welborn then followed with a double to right center that cleared the bases.
UT Arlington scored the go-ahead run two frames later on Ryan Walker's sacrifice fly off freshman right-hander Jordan Pacheco. The Mavericks added one more mark in the inning thanks to Derek Miller's RBI single through the left side of the infield.
Pacheco (0-2) allowed a pair of runs (one earned) on three hits and struck out a batter in 1.1 innings of relief.
All nine batters in the Roadrunners' starting lineup registered at least one hit, including junior Ryan Dalton, who went 3-for-5 and scored a run.
The series continues at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
