SAN ANTONIO — South Alabama erased a two-point halftime deficit with a 13-2 run in the second half to pull ahead and the Lady Jags scored a 54-42 victory against UTSA on Friday night in the second game of the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic.

Junior Whitney Wright led the way for the Roadrunners (1-4) with 10 points, while Camille Reynolds paced the Lady Jags (4-1) with a game-high 19 points.

After a pair of free throws from Wright, Jennifer Johnson started the big run with a 3-pointer and Reynolds’ jumper gave South Alabama its first lead, 36-34, with 10:10 to play in the contest. Sophomore Judy Jones tied the score for the fifth and final time with a jumper on UTSA’s next possession, but the Lady Jags run continued.

Reynolds scored six of South Alabama’s next eight points before a layup by junior Cori Cooper ended a scoring drought that lasted nearly four minutes for the Roadrunners.

Two freebies from Cooper with five minutes to play cut the deficit to six, but South Alabama put the game away by scoring eight of the next 10 points for the final 12-point margin.

The Lady Jags benefited from 26 UTSA turnovers, including 14 in the second half, and scored 20 points off those miscues.

The Roadrunners led throughout the first half and had their largest advantage of the period, six, after a jumper in the paint from Jones with 12:49 to play. However, South Alabama scored the next half dozen points on a pair of free throws and two baskets by Johnson to tie the score at 13 two minutes later.

UTSA recovered from the brief run and rebuilt the lead at the free throw line.

Despite attempting 19 fewer shots, the Birds took a 24-22 advantage into the locker room after outscoring the Lady Jags 13-5 at the charity stripe. Additionally, UTSA held South Alabama to just 24 percent shooting from the field, including a paltry 1-for-11 from behind the arc.

The tournament will conclude on Saturday when UTSA hosts Detroit (0-5) at 5 p.m. The Titans dropped a 64-55 decision to Utah in Friday’s opening contest.
