SAN ANTONIO — Northwestern State scored in six different innings and took advantage of four UTSA errors en route to a 9-4 victory on Friday night at Roadrunner Field.
The Roadrunners (9-9, 1-3 SLC), who lost their fourth consecutive contest, tied the game at two in the second, but the Demons (6-11, 3-1 SLC) answered by outscoring UTSA, 7-2, the rest of the way.
Colin Bear (2-2) allowed four runs on eight hits, walked one and struck out five in 6.2 innings.
Meanwhile, the Roadrunners' pitching staff issued seven free passes, including four by senior starter Casey Selsor.
Northwestern State opened the scoring in the second with a pair of tallies.
Will Watson singled after Ryan Westbrook walked to lead off the frame and Nick Hinojos then advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Todd Wallace followed with an RBI ground out and Ray Frias then stroked a run-scoring single.
The Birds answered with a pair in the bottom of the panel.
Sophomore Mike Warren hit a bloop double down the right-field line and scored when senior Matthew James followed with a sharp base hit to right. Senior Colby Braddock then singled to left and pushed James to third. Sophomore RJ Perucki's double play grounder plated James with the tying run.
The Demons took control from there.
Northwestern State reclaimed the advantage with a two-run third, one more in the fourth and another two-spot in the fifth.
UTSA picked up a run in the sixth on junior Ryan Dalton's third home run of the season (30th of his career).
Both clubs put up a single mark in the next frame.
Jordan Buckley reached on a single up the middle, swiped both second and third before Braddock's attempt to cut him down at the hot corner sailed into into left field, which allowed him to score.
Meanwhile, the Birds responded with Perucki's one-out double and freshman Justin Anderson drove him in with the first hit of his career.
The Demons capped the scoring in the eighth when Frias lined a solo homer over the wall in left.
Selsor (3-2) surrendered seven runs (five earned) on four hits in his 4.2 stanzas.
The series continues at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
