SAN ANTONIO — Caleb Smith limited UTSA to four hits and No. 28 Sam Houston State rolled to a 13-2 victory on Saturday afternoon at Roadrunner Field. The game was called after seven innings due to the Southland Conference run rule.
Smith (4-2) went the distance and held the Roadrunners (11-16, 3-8 SLC) to two runs (one earned), while walking a pair and fanning four.
Meanwhile, the Bearkats (18-9, 9-2 SLC) pounded out 16 hits for the second consecutive game, including three by Jake Arrington.
UTSA fell behind in the first after Sam Houston State picked up a pair of tallies on two run-scoring singles with two outs.
The Birds got one of the runs back in the bottom half of the frame when center fielder Luke Plucheck dropped a fly ball that allowed sophomore John Welborn to score from first.
However, the Bearkats doubled their total in the following stanza with RBI singles by Anthony Azar and Ryan O'Hearn.
Sam Houston State pushed their advantage to 7-1 in the fourth after sophomore starter Michael Kraft threw away a Plucheck bunt that allowed Corey Toups to score. Two batters later, O'Hearn cleared the bases with a two-run homer to left center.
UTSA scored its final tally in the bottom of the fourth on junior Daniel Rockett's third home run this spring.
Greg Olson continued the onslaught for the Bearkats with a two-run double in the sixth.
