LAKE CHARLES, La. — Renny Weber slid headfirst in front of the tag by junior reliever Clint Sharp after he threw a wild pitch and McNeese State rallied for a 3-2 victory against UTSA in 15 innings on Thursday night at Cowboy Diamond.
Weber started the decisive frame with a double down the left-field line. After being advanced to third on Nick Eubanks' sacrifice bunt, Seth Granger then was intentionally walked. Sharp's 0-2 slider to Michael Sullivan bounced past freshman catcher John Bormann and Weber scampered home with the winning run.
Ryan Sampere (1-1) gave up a hit and struck out one in 1.2 scoreless innings to pick up the win.
Meanwhile, Weber paced the Cowboys (12-15, 8-5 SLC) offensively with three hits.
The Roadrunners (11-19, 3-10 SLC), who dropped their sixth straight contest, scored a pair of runs in the sixth to take the lead when junior Daniel Rockett produced an RBI single and junior Jake Wood followed with a run-scoring double.
However, McNeese State answered a panel later.
Skylar Barrentine led off the stanza with a double and later crossed Tyler Krouser's base hit. After Andrew Guillotte singled, Weber tied the contest with an single of his own..
UTSA had scoring chances taken away in the 10th when the Cowboys gunned down two Roadrunners at the plate on singles by Rockett and Wood.
Sharp (1-5) entered the game in the 11th and retired 11 consecutive batters before Klouser reached on a single in the 14th. The San Antonio native then struck out Guillotte to push the contest to another stanza.
Senior southpaw starter Casey Selsor allowed a pair of runs, scattered 10 hits and fanned a half dozen in 8.1 innings of work.
Meanwhile, Cowboys starter Trey Brown was equally as impressive after surrendering just two runs on six hits to go along with six punchouts in seven frames.
Freshman Justin Anderson picked up four of UTSA's 10 hits on the night, including a pair of two-baggers.
It was the second-longest game in program history, second only to the 16-inning affair the Roadrunners played at Lamar on April 3, 2004. UTSA won that contest, 8-6.
The series continues at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
