Houston rides four-run first inning to 8-3 victory against UTSA

HOUSTON — Houston scored four runs in the opening inning and never looked back in an 8-3 victory against UTSA on Tuesday night at Cougar Field.

The Roadrunners (19-26) plated two runs in the second, but they were unable to get any closer the rest of the way.

Aaron Garza (2-4) limited UTSA to two runs on four hits while fanning six in five frames of work.

Meanwhile, Taylor White led the Cougars' 11-hit attack with three knocks to go along with a pair of RBIs and three stolen bases.

UTSA starter Jordan Pacheco was unable to retire the first five batters he faced, as Houston (15-26-1) opened a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

The Roadrunners cut the deficit in half a stanza later on senior Matthew James' RBI groundout and sophomore RJ Perucki's sacrifice fly.

However, the Cougars got the two runs back in the fourth on a pair of run-scoring singles by White and Jacob Lueneburg.

UH tacked on solo tallies in the seventh and eighth to increase their lead to six runs.

Sophomore John Welborn produced a pinch-hit RBI single through the middle of the infield in the ninth to cap the scoring.

Pacheco (1-3) allowed a half dozen runs on seven hits and struck out three in 3.2 innngs of work.

UTSA will return to action on Friday when it begins a three-game Southland Conference home series with Nicholls (21-22, 9-15 SLC). First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Roadrunner Field.
