SAN ANTONIO — UTSA athletic director Lynn Hickey heard about Title IX for the first time as a young teacher and coach at Reeds Spring (Mo.) High School.
The school superintendent invited her into his office for a short, not-so-sweet message: Whatever equality was being mandated by the new initiative would not be honored in his district, and if Hickey didn't like it, she was free to leave.
"I didn't even know what he was talking about," she said. "I just said, 'Yes sir.'"
It was the early 1970s. Hickey was making $6,500 a year to teach for seven hours while coaching every girls sport at the junior high and high school, with a 15-minute break for lunch.
