Four-run second lifts Stephen F. Austin past UTSA on Friday

NACOGDOCHES — Stephen F. Austin erupted for four runs in the second inning, Cameron Gann hurled a complete game and the Lumberjacks defeated UTSA, 4-1, in the opening contest of a three-game Southland Conference series on Friday at Jaycees Field.

Gann (2-0) allowed just one run and struck out three en route to going the distance for the first time in his career.

Meanwhile, Freddy Villalobos paced SFA (8-13, 3-4 SLC) offensively with two hits and a pair of RBIs.

Stephen F. Austin sent eight batters to the plate in the decisive frame.

The first five hitters reached safely, including Jarid Scarafiotti and Villalobos, both of whom drove in runs with doubles. The Lumberjacks also picked up a sacrifice fly off the bat of Zach Benson to cap the scoring.

The Roadrunners (10-12, 2-5 SLC) plated their lone run in the following panel.

Sophomore John Welborn reached on a fielder's choice and junior Daniel Rockett followed with a two-out single to left that sent Welborn plateward.

Senior Casey Selsor (3-3) gave up four runs on seven hits, walked three and fanned a pair in a complete-game effort.

Freshman Horacio Correa III collected three hits, including a pair of doubles, while Rockett went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

The set continues at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
