NACOGDOCHES — Hunter Dozier's walk-off single in the 11th inning propelled Stephen F. Austin to a 4-3 victory on Saturday afternoon at Jaycees Field.
Dozier's game-winning hit cleared the left-field wall, but he was ruled out after passing Bryce Cummings, who was still standing at first base. Cummings was allowed to trot around the bases for the game-winning run.
The Roadrunners (10-13, 2-6 SLC) forced extra frames after coming back from a three-run deficit.
UTSA had its chances to take the lead in the contest, but it stranded 14 runners on the basepaths and left at least one runner in scoring position in six different frames, including the bases loaded in the seventh.
Dozier finished the contest with three hits and the game-winning RBI.
Meanwhile, Alex Moshier (3-0) picked up the win after hurling three scoreless innings of relief.
The Lumberjacks (9-13, 4-4 SLC) plated three runs off freshman starter Justin Anderson in the opening panel.
Five of the first six batters reached base, including Max Lamantia, who produced a two-run single. Ricardo Sanchez drove in the other run on a single through the left side of the infield.
The Birds answered with an unearned run in the second.
Senior Matthew James singled with one out and advanced to third on a throwing error by Freddy Villalobos. Anderson then followed with a ground out that pushed James across the plate.
UTSA tied the contest four panels later.
Junior Jake Wood reached on an infield single and scored when Anderson followed with an RBI double to right. Two batters later, sophomore RJ Perucki drove in Anderson with a single to left.
The Roadrunners squandered another scoring chance in the 11th.
Senior Casey Selsor led off with a single and was moved into scoring position on junior Daniel Rockett's sacrifice bunt. Junior Ryan Dalton then flied out to right, which pushed Selsor over to third, but James lined out to end the threat.
Stephen F. Austin started its decisive inning with Cummings drawing a lead-off walk, which set up Dozier's heroics.
Sophomore Matt Sims (0-1) allowed a hit, walked one and struck out three in two innings of relief.
Anderson went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs to lead UTSA at the plate.
The series concludes at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
