LAKE CHARLES, La. — Freshman Justin Anderson faced one batter over the minimum in a one-hit shutout and UTSA handed McNeese State a 3-0 setback on Saturday afternoon at Cowboy Diamond.

The Roadrunners improved to 13-19 overall and 5-10 in Southland Conference play, while the one-hitter was UTSA's first since a 17-0 run-rule victory against Prairie View A&M on March 1, 2000.

On day after sophomore Michael Kraft took a no-hitter into the ninth inning, Anderson (2-1) was perfect through the first five frames before Matt Williams led off the sixth with a single up the middle. The right-hander threw just 89 pitches (63 strikes) and struck out five.

"I was able to keep the ball down and had a lot of help from my defense," Anderson said. "By the time we reached the fourth inning, I knew everything was working for me."

"Justin got ahead in the count and threw quality strikes," 12th-year head coach Sherman Corbett said. "He worked both sides of the plate extremely well. Hopefully, we can build on this impressive performance and keep getting quality pitching efforts like we did in this series."

Senior Matthew James gave Anderson an early lead to work with after hitting a solo home run in the opening stanza.

Freshman Horacio Correa III doubled UTSA's advantage a frame later with a sacrifice fly that plated junior Jake Wood, who earned led off the panel with a walk.

The Birds scored their final tally in the seventh when sophomore John Welborn drew a one-out walk and came around to score on freshman John Bormann's double to left.

The Cowboys (12-17, 8-7 SLC) received a quality start from Tyler McDonald (2-2), who allowed three runs on five hits, walked two and struck out a pair in also going the distance.

UTSA returns to action on Tuesday, April 10, when it travels to Texas-Pan American for a 4 p.m. contest. The Broncs (16-6) handed the Roadrunners an 18-13 setback on March 27.
