UTSA Athletics Department Spotlight - Creative Services

by Sean Cartell

This summer, UTSA Athletics will be profiling its numerous areas to provide an inside look into how each unit serves Roadrunners’ student-athletes.

In this edition, we sat down with Katie Meyers, Assistant Athletics Director for Creative Services, to discuss the Creative Services unit.

Q: How does your department service UTSA student-athletes?

Katie Meyers: “The UTSA Athletics Creative Services department is tasked with elevating the visibility of our UTSA student-athletes by promoting their achievements both on and off the field, providing content for their personal platforms and telling their stories.”

Q: How many members are on your team and what roles do they serve?

Katie Meyers: “We have a total of six people on our team, including myself. Two graphic designers who play a crucial role in creating visual content that supports our branding, marketing, and promotional efforts. Two videographers who are critical to our storytelling efforts, producing high-quality video content to showcase the activities, achievements and stories of our UTSA student-athletes and coaches. We also have a Director of Sports Production who oversees approximately 100 live events that are broadcast live to ESPN+ along with shoulder programming including press conferences, coaches shows and more.”

Q: What makes UTSA a leader in your area?

Katie Meyers: “UTSA is a leader in the creative services space because of our innovative storytelling, high-quality content production and our brand consistency, while supporting the success and visibility of our athletics programs.”

Q: Why did you choose to come to UTSA?

Katie Meyers: “I chose to come to UTSA because of the athletics department’s commitment to excellence and the opportunities for our team to share the stories of our student-athletes with an innovative and dynamic approach.”

Q: What are the most rewarding aspects of your role?

Katie Meyers: “There is nothing more rewarding than watching my team grow and develop their craft, while telling student-athlete stories and sharing memories that will last a lifetime.”

Q: What is something about your department that people may not know?

Katie Meyers: “People would probably be surprised to know how many different departments and areas our team collaborates with daily including academics, recruiting, nutrition, equipment, strength and conditioning and more.”

Q: What advice do you have for students or student-athletes who may be interested in going into your profession?

Katie Meyers: “My advice for students or student-athletes interested in pursuing a career in creative services is to make yourself as marketable as possible by developing a diverse skill set, being present and consistently demonstrating your commitment to your craft.”

Q: What type of educational background is required for your role?

Katie Meyers: “There are many educational routes an individual can take in my role. Typically, an individual will have studied film, photography, or marketing in order to work their way into this role. Personally, I earned my undergraduate degree in art/film & television and a master’s in Sport Administration.”
