Crosstown Showdown on the docket for softball

UTSA will face UIW on Tuesday at 5 p.m. inside the confines of H-E-B Field

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA softball team is set for a Tuesday night Crosstown Showdown against UIW, with a 5 p.m. first pitch at H-E-B Field.

The Roadrunners (12-37, 3-18 The American) will be looking to snap an 11-game skid, last falling to Florida Atlantic in a trio of road conference contests.

UTSA will enter the contest, sitting 28th nationally with 157 walks on the season, while senior Taylor Jensen ranks 15th, catching 12 base runners stealing. As one of The American's league leaders, classmate Jamie Gilbert has twirled 12 complete games. She also is second in the AAC in games started (21), fourth in innings pitched (126.2), third in pitching appearances (32), and sixth in strikeouts (89).

The Cardinals (28-12, 12-6 Southland) have been red-hot as of late, winning eight of their last 10 and picking up series victories over Lamar, Santa Clara, and Houston Christian in the process.

UIW represents one of the nation's top defensive teams, with a .977 fielding percentage checking in at 12th on the NCAA leaderboard, while 11 hit batters are the 17th-fewest, and a .327 AVG is 17th. Rounding things out, the Cardinals are 32nd with a .392 OBP, and 6.0 runs per game are 29th.

Individually, Victoria Altamirano maintains a .461 AVG that checks in at sixth nationally. She's 16th with 114 total bases, 13th with 65 hits, and ninth with 1.18 hits per game.

In the circle, the Cardinals boast a 2.79 ERA, with Samantha Portillo leading the way at 1.97 and Larissa Jacquez not far behind at 2.03. Jacquez is the team leader with nine wins; Portillo owns eight, and Bella Mitchell has logged five.
