SAN ANTONIO — The University of Texas at San Antonio on Thursday held a grand opening ceremony for Park West Fieldhouse, a new facility that will serve as the home of the women's soccer and men's and women's track & field/cross country programs.
Guests at the ceremony heard from several speakers, including UTSA President Taylor Eighmy, UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos, American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco, Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai, Bexar County Precinct 3 Commissioner Grant Moody, Roadrunner Foundation President Gene Dawson and UTSA soccer student-athlete Avery Chaney. That group of dignitaries participated in photo opportunities and then welcomed guests inside for a tour of the new facility.
Park West Fieldhouse is another milestone in the university's strategic vision to further promote the academic success, health, wellness and performance of its student-athletes. The facility will continue a long-standing partnership between the university and Bexar County, enhancing the community's ability to continue to host regional and national sporting events for youth.
The $8 million, 14,325 square-foot facility is located at the UTSA Park West Athletics Complex on Kyle Seale Parkway adjacent to Loop 1604.
"I'm immensely grateful for the ongoing support of past and present Bexar County leadership, the Roadrunner Foundation, and our many external partners and donors whose generosity has made the Park West Fieldhouse a reality for our incredible coaches, student-athletes, and the entire San Antonio community," said Eighmy. "Athletics remains the most visible front porch to our university, and we're so fortunate to have partners that believe deeply in supporting the purpose and mission of UTSA to advance the success of all students."
The new facility will help enhance UTSA's competitiveness in recruiting and retaining the nation's best student-athletes, coaches and staff. It includes a multipurpose community room, locker rooms, team lounges, a sports medicine center and equipment area.
"At UTSA, our winning purpose is to develop champions in the classroom, in competition and in life, while serving as an integral part of the undergraduate student experience," Campos said. "This facility matches that purpose well, improving our efforts in providing a championship experience, and also allowing for greater partnerships with the community, particularly as it relates to our youth."
"Park West Fieldhouse will provide UTSA with a first-class facility to help attract the best student-athletes, coaches and staff," Dawson said. "The momentum from opening the Roadrunner Athletics Center of Excellence in 2021 combined with unveiling this wonderful facility today continues to help propel UTSA and the Athletics Department to the next level. This is a very exciting time to be a Roadrunner."
As part of its commitment as an urban serving, community-engaged university, UTSA will make Park West Athletics Complex available for public benefit, including for athletics camps, competitive events and clinics. UTSA will continue to partner with Visit San Antonio, San Antonio Sports and other entities to bring sporting events to Bexar County.
