SAN ANTONIO – UTSA men's basketball will hit the road to face Illinois State on Tuesday at 2 p.m. on Ticket 760 AM and ESPN+/3.
UTSA (6-5) has two remaining games in non-conference play before opening up the league slate at Middle Tennessee and UAB. The Roadrunners have won five of their last eight games, including three wins in the last five.
UTSA is coming off a 68-50 loss to UTRGV on Friday night in the Convocation Center that saw the Vaqueros use a 20-3 run in the second half to erase a UTSA lead and secure the win. UTSA saw UTRGV score 14 straight points and post a 33-11 run over a nine-minute stretch.
The Roadrunners have averaged 68.4 points, 40.0 rebounds, 11.4 assists, 6.5 steals and 2.9 blocks per game as a team, shooting 37.7 percent and holding foes to a 44.3 clip from the field. UTSA is shooting 27.8 percent from 3-point range, with foes shooting 33.1 percent from distance.
Junior guard Dhieu Deing leads the team with 16.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Jordan Ivy-Curry adds 14.1 points and 2.8 rebounds per game, while Jacob Germany sports 13.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per outing. Cedrick Alley Jr. leads the team with 7.7 rebounds per game, averaging 10.1 points per outing.
Illinois State (7-5, 1-0 The Valley) has won three straight games entering the clash with the Roadrunners, including opening league play with a 85-64 beatdown of Ball State on Saturday. The Redbirds have won five of their last six games, with the lone loss coming vs. Jackson State. As a team, ISU is averaging 80.3 points, 36.8 rebounds, 12.1 assists, 14.7 turnovers, 7.2 steals and 6.6 blocks per game, shooting 45.4 percent as a team and holding foes to 42.9 percent. ISU is averaging 38.5 percent from distance, with foes shooting 37.5 percent.
Antonio Reeves averages 20.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per game to lead the team. Sy Chatman averages 14.1 points and a team-leading 6.8 rebounds per game. Josiah Strong sports 12.9 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. Mark Freeman adds 9.9 points and 2.8 rebounds, while Kendall Lewis sports 9.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.
UTSA leads the all-time series with Illinois Staste, 2-1, having won the last two meetings. In the meeting in 2019, UTSA posted an 89-70 win, getting 41 points from Jhivvan Jackson. Jackson went 12 of 25 from the field and 5 of 11 from deep, connecting on all 12 free throws and adding five rebounds. UTSA also got 10 points and six boards from Byron Frohnen and eight points from Luka Barisic, Atem Bior and Knox Hellums. UTSA shot 43.9 percent from the field and was 7 of 18 from deep, while ISU shot 40.3 percent and 5 of 24 from range. Keith Fisher led ISU with 20 points and seven rebounds.
