DAVIS, Calif. – Juri Reckow (Hamburg, Germany) earned a pair of wins but UC Davis rallied after losing the doubles points to edge UTSA men's tennis, 5-2, in the season opener and debut of the Sergey Avdeyev era, on Saturday afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
UTSA (0-1) fell at UC Davis (1-2) in the opening of the Avdeyev's tenure leading the Roadrunners. Avdeyev took over the helm of UTSA men's tennis on Nov. 5, 2019 after a decorated career as the associate head coach at Old Dominion.
"We all came out, had energy and the guys were ready and hungry," Avdeyev said. "We won the doubles point but didn't start well in singles and lost some momentum. We came back to win Juri's court, had three matches go into three sets, but UC Davis just outplayed us, winning more deuce points and the important points at the right time. We're looking forward to playing Pacific and bouncing back, learning form this match and contining the process."
The Roadrunners got the doubles point behind Rekow and Sebastian Rodriguez (Trujillo, Peru), and Kai Brietbach (Kaarst, Germany) and Sebastian Rodriguez (Trujillo, Peru).
UC Davis claimed five of the six singles wins, with Reckow claiming a 6-2, 6-4 win on court three.
UTSA continues a season-opening road swing in California with a trip to face Pacific on Sunday at 12 p.m.
