Get to know Cross Country’s Martin Luevano

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA cross country team is three meets into the 2019 season. Before UTSA's next meet in College Station on Oct. 19, get to know a few of the Roadrunners student-athletes. Today, learn all about  senior Martin Luevano, a native of Boerne, Texas! 
 
Luevano, who prepped at Boerne High School, has competed in two of UTSA's three meets in the fall, including earning a 15th place finish at the UIW Invitational on Sept. 14. 
 
At what age did you begin running competitively? 
 
ML: 12
 
Why did you start running competitively / under what circumstances did you begin focusing on the sport? 
 
ML: My older brothers all ran track and cross country. I wanted to be like them.
 
What is your earliest memory of distance running? 
 
ML: Doing laps around the elementary school
 
Who is your inspiration in competition and why? 
 
ML: I gain inspiration mostly from people like my teammates, God and family. I also am inspired by music.
 
Who is a former collegiate or professional athlete whom you admire? 
 
ML: Steve Prefontaine, because he had a winning attitude and always gave his best when it came to running.
 
What family members have made the biggest impact on your life and why? 
 
ML: There's my parents, Marcial and Maggie, and my seven siblings. My dad and my brother Moses have had the biggest impact on my life because they are such hard workers. They always push me towards my goals.
 
Do you have any family members who played collegiate sports?
 
ML:Yes, my brothers Moses ran cross country and track at SFA and Michael ran cross country and track and UIW. 
 
What are your team and individual goals at UTSA?
 
ML: My individual goal is to make it to nationals. The team goal is to win conference. 
 
What is your academic major?
 
ML: My major is mathematics. I chose math because I've always been good with numbers and it's a diverse major.
 
What are your career goals and why do you have an interest in pursuing that particular career? 
 
ML: I want to pursue a career as an actuary because I feel great with numbers and wouldn't mind an office setting.
 
What do you enjoy doing outside of running and school? 
 
ML: Hanging out with friends and family, playing sports and playing music
 
What is something most people might not know about you? 
 
ML: I write songs and perform them.
 
What advice would you give to a young athlete who would like to one day be in your shoes? 
 
ML: Try.
