Solid opening day of the ITA Texas Regional for women's tennis

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – UTSA women's tennis racked up five singles victories and two doubles Thursday on day one of the ITA Regional Championships, hosted by Texas A&M.
 
Senior Diya Menon and sophomore Sophie Omoworare advanced to the round of 32 by outlasting Texas State's pair of Renata Gonzalez and Sofia Murcia 8-5. 
 
Sophomore Jasmin Starr and senior Kylee Kato cruised past Sam Houston State's Lusine Chobanyan and Ryli Ruffin 8-2, securing a spot in Friday's round of 32.
 
Senior Laura Cabrera and freshman Laura Munoz-Baroja fell 1-8 to Houston's duo of Sophie Gerits and Phonexay Chitdara.
 
Sophomore Catalina Cabrique and freshman Keegan McCain found itself on the wrong side of an 3-8 decision against Liz Chileno and Nanaka Takeuchi of UT Arlington.
 
In singles action, McCain was defeated by Constandena Nicolaou who inked consecutive 6-3 tallies. McCain advanced to Friday's action after rebounding with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Abilene Christian's Claire Fisher.
 
Munoz-Baroja fell in the first round to Texas' Marta Perez-mur 0-6, 2-6, before registering a 6-2, 6-0 win over UTRGV's Alicia Tha, advancing to Friday's action. 
 
After falling 4-6, 5-7 to Kristyna Mamicova of UTRGV, Omoworare advanced to Friday's action with a 6-2, 2-6, 10-5 victory over UIW's Sophia Kermet.
 
Cabrique posted a 1-1 record, defeating UTRGV's Ana Platisa 7-5, 6-1, before Renee McBryde of Texas A&M earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory, ending Cabrique's run.
 
Cabrera registered a first-round victory 6-3,6-4 over Baylor's Kristina Sorokolet, before bowing out of the tournament with a 6-7(3), 3-6 loss to Isabella Dilaura of Texas Tech.
 
Menon ended her fall campaign with consecutive losses, dropping a 0-6, 0-6 decision to Stephen F. Austin's Annie Walker, before falling 2-6, 1-6 to Chitdara.
 
Kato's day ended with consecutive defeats, first by a score of 1-6, 3-6 to Maria Ponomareva of North Texas, then suffering a 3-6, 3-6 setback to Sam Houston State's Rosalie Gerrittsen.  
 
Starr dropped consecutive sets, completing her fall singles action. Texas A&M Corpus Christi's Carolina Bulatovic eked out a 5-7, 6-7 (6) decision before Starr fell 3-6, 7-5, 6-10 to Nidhi Surapaneni from North Texas 3-6, 7-5, 6-10.
