Campbell’s win headlines UTSA action Saturday at Alumni Muster

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Maia Campbell won the women's shot put to headline action for the UTSA track and field teams Saturday at the Alumni Muster at E.B. Cushing Stadium.

Campbell, a junior from Converse Judson High School, grabbed gold for the first time this season with a mark of 14.61 meters (47-11 ¼). That measurement came on her third of six attempts and was enough to overtake Houston's Priscilla Adejokun, who posted a 14.27m (46-10) effort on her second try, and hold on for the win in the 12-person field. Campbell's throw matched her personal record set in a runner-up performance at the UTSA Invitational in March, which keeps her in the No. 5 spot on UTSA's all-time performers list.

Olivia Esemena moved into the Roadrunners' top-five performers list in the 100 meters after clocking a wind-legal time of 11.48 seconds to finish eighth overall and third among collegiate competitors. The junior from Arlington improved her previous personal best, a wind-illegal 11.65 posted on this same track two weeks ago at the Texas A&M Invitational, and is just shy of the program's No. 3 spot of 11.47 held by Jhorden Hunter.

Esemena also helped the women's 4x100m relay record a season-best time. She combined with Sierra Andres, Vera Chinedu and Sydney Howells for a fifth-place time of 45.94.

In other action for the women, freshman Orla Brothers crossed fourth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:02.73.

A trio of runner-up showings headlined the day for the men.

Luca Chatham finished second in the 800 meters, the fourth top-three showing in the event of his final outdoor campaign. The Dallas native clocked a 1:50.52, which was just shy of his season-best time of 1:50.11 registered last week in Houston, to cross second behind Texas A&M's Carlton Orange (1:49.48).

Meanwhile, Vincent Perez was second among collegiate competitors and third overall in the hammer throw with a mark of 56.21m (184-5). The senior also finished seventh overall and sixth among collegians in the discus with a 46.08m (151-2) measurement.

The Roadrunners finished 2-3 in the shot put. Steven Thomas secured silver with a mark of 15.57m (51-1), while Mike Zuniga grabbed bronze with a 15.06m (49-5) heave.

Andre Douglas also brought home a bronze in the field. The sophomore from Jamaica skipped to a 14.97m (49-1 ½) mark for third place in the triple jump behind a pair of Texas A&M jumpers.

In other action for the men in the field, Jamal Anderson cleared 2.04m (6-8 ¼) to place fifth overall and fourth among collegians in the high jump.

On the track, Justin Gerbrecht sped to a 14.52 clocking for fourth in the 110m hurdles, while Andrew Pirog cruised to a season-best time of 52.38 for fifth overall and fourth among collegiate runners in the 400m hurdles. The men's 4x100m relay of Davante Edwards, Mikael Dawkins, Kaleb Campbell and Jared Taylor crossed fourth overall and third among collegiate quartets in 40.86.

The Roadrunners will travel to Houston next Friday, May 3, for the Tom Tellez Invitational in their final tune-up for the Conference USA Outdoor Championships on May 9-12 in Charlotte, N.C.
