Chatham highlights Saturday action at Texas A&M Invitational

COLLEGE STATION — Luca Chatham won a bronze medal in the men's 800 meters to highlight Saturday action for the UTSA track & field teams at the Texas A&M Invitational at EB Cushing Stadium.

Chatham clocked a 1:54.41 to finish third in the 800m and provide six points for the Roadrunners, who finished fifth in the team standings with 49 points. The senior from Dallas finished just ahead of Houston's Cameron Laverty in the race won by Michael Rhoads of Air Force (1:50.38).

UTSA also received a pair of fourth-place finishes on the track on a windy Saturday evening.

Vasha Sheriff circled in 48.18 for fourth in the 400m, as the senior from Amarillo finished just in front of Air Force's Sedacy Walden (48.48) in a tight race won by Texas A&M's Kyree Johnson in 47.15.

Meanwhile, Justin Gerbrecht cruised to a wind-aided 14.69 clocking in the 110m hurdles to also finish fourth. The senior from Houston crossed just ahead of Sam Houston State's Fabian McCall (14.76) and was right behind Arizona State's Kentre Patterson, who finished third in 14.58.

Gary Haasbroek headlined Friday action for the men with a runner-up showing in the long jump. The freshman from Australia, who earned second-team All-America accolades in the indoor heptathlon last month, leaped to a mark of 7.24 meters (23-9) for the silver in his first outdoor long jump competition of the season.

On the women's side, Olivia Esemena sped to a wind-aided 11.65 clocking to place fourth in the 100m. That time, which include a tailwind of +7.4 meters per second, is the fastest under any conditions recorded by the junior from Arlington and it would rank her fifth on the program's all-time performers list.

Both relay squads finished in the top four to help the women end up in sixth place in the team race with 41 points. The 4x400m relay foursome passed the baton to third place in 3:57.34, while the 4x100m relay placed fourth in 46.57.

Darionne Gibson added a fifth-place effort in the 400m, circling in 58.64

In the field, Lacee Barnes finished fourth in the discus with a mark of 46.36m (152-1) and the sophomore from the Cayman Islands also measured 12.71m (41-8 ½) for 10th in the shot put.

Maia Campbell followed Friday's bronze-medal effort in the hammer throw with an eighth-place mark of 13.18m (43-3) in the shot put.

The women were led by Caroline Bellows' win in the pole vault on Friday. The senior out of George West cleared a personal-best height of 3.88m (12-8 ¾).

The Roadrunners will return to action next week with the Mt. SAC Relays on April 18-20 in Torrance, Calif., and the J. Fred Duckett Twilight Invitational on April 20 in Houston.
