Softball goes 1-1 on Friday at Lion Classic

HAMMOND, La. – The UTSA softball team went 1-1 on the day with a victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 5-3 after a 4-5 loss to SIUE on Friday at the Lion Classic II.
 
The Roadrunners improved to 2-5 on the season.
 
Game 1 vs SIUE
The Cougars scored early with two runs in the top of the first. Alana Cobb-Adams hit a single down the right field line, then advanced to second off a sac bunt from Bailley Concatto. Alyssa Heren hit a double as Cobb-Adams scored.
 
In the bottom of the first, Celeste Loughman hit a double to right center. Bailee Baldwin and Victoria Villarreal were walked as Riley Grunberg struck out, but to popups from the Roadrunners ended the inning.
 
Cobb-Adams hit a double and stole third in the top of the third inning before finding home plate  off a ground out from Concatto. The Cougars led 3-0 going to the bottom of the frame.
 
UTSA scored twice in the bottom of the third to put the Roadrunners on the board. Loughman singled to the shortstop then stole second off a fly out from Baldwin. Grunberg and Villarreal loaded the bases off a walk and a hit by pitch, respectively. A passed ball by the Cougars advanced the runners and Loughman scored. Two more walks from the pitcher gave the Roadrunners another run as Grunberg scored. The Cougars led 3-2 heading to the fourth.
 
SIUE had two more runs in the top of the fourth to increase the lead to three (2-5). Baldwin hit a two-run home run, and first homer of the season, in the fourth to bridge the gap to one, 4-5.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, the Roadrunners had the bases loaded with one out, but two batter struck out swinging to end the game.
 
Game 2 vs Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Freshman Marena Estell picked up her first collegiate victory in a 5-2 defeat over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
 
The first three innings were quick as the Roadrunners had just one hit in the second and kept the Islanders from getting on base.
 
In the top of the fourth, back-to-back triples from Bailee Baldwin and Riley Grunberg put UTSA on the board. Madison Washington singled to right field as Grunberg scored. Two more singles for the Roadrunners from Kaitlin Lopez and Hailey Garza advanced the runners. Washington reached home off a ground out from Kylea Nix as UTSA led 3-0 going to the bottom of the frame.
 
The Roadrunners posted two more runs in the top of the fifth to increase the lead to 5-0. Celeste Loughman was walked, which was followed by a two-run homer from Baldwin to give UTSA the advantage.
 
UTSA had allowed just three hits until the bottom of the seventh. After reaching second on a fielding error, Whitney Wendel scored off two singles by the Islanders. Another fielding error by the Roadrunners advanced runners as Kennedy Johnson scored. Alyson Silvas scored on a ground out to second base by Ashley Moss as AMCC scored three runs in the inning.
 
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow when they face Prairie View A&M at 1:30 p.m.
