UTSA wins nine events at FasTrak Invitational

HOUSTON — The UTSA track & field teams won nine events at the FasTrak Invitational on Saturday at Yeoman Fieldhouse.

The Roadrunners won five gold medals on the men's side, while the women collected four in both teams' second meet of the indoor season.

Orla Brothers crossed first in the women's 400 meters with a time of 56.47 to finish just ahead of teammate Darionne Gibson's runner-up 56.75 effort. Brothers, a freshman from Sussex, England, also anchored the 4x400m relay team to first place, joining Gibson, Jamiah Jackson and Sierra Andres for a 3:51.56 clocking in the final race of the day.

Meanwhile, Gabriyella Torres leaped to a winning measurement of 18-10 ¾ (5.76m) in the long jump for the senior's first win of the season.

The women picked up their other gold medal in the 3,000m, as Charlette Janicek clocked an 11:12.99 for a comfortable 22-second win ahead of Texas Wesleyan's Melissa Gonzales (11:34.45).

The men registered five wins behind a trio of personal bests.

Andre Douglas collected his second straight win in the triple jump, as the sophomore from Jamaica skipped to a 51-1 ¾ mark for a new indoor personal record a week after winning the same event at the Ted Nelson Invitational in College Station. That measurement places him second on UTSA's all-time performers list in the triple jump.

Vincent Perez recorded a new career best in the weight throw with a winning effort of 61-3, which vaulted the senior from San Antonio into third place on the school's all-time performers list.

Meanwhile, Gary Haasbroek jumped into second place on UTSA's all-time long jump list with a winning leap of 24-9 ¼. The freshman from Australia led a 1-2-3 finish in the long jump, as Douglas secure silver with a 22-11 mark and Jake McDaniel placed third with a 22-3 ¾ effort.

On the track, All-American Patrick Prince cruised to victory in the 60m hurdles with a 7.84 clocking after posting the top time of the prelims in 7.92, while Haasbroek finished fifth in 8.18.

Desmond Jefferson circled the 200-meter, banked track twice in a time of 48.98 to take top honors in the 400m.

The men added a pair of third-place finishes from Jamal Anderson, as the freshman cleared 6-2 in the high jump and measured 47-6 ½ in the triple jump. Mike Zuniga also won a bronze with a 44-1 ½ performance in the shot put.

The women had a trio of runner-up showings, including two in field events.

Maia Campbell had the second-best measurement in the weight throw with a 54-6 ¾ effort, while Caroline Bellows cleared 11-11 ¼ for silver in the pole vault.

Jackson stopped the clock in 8.63 for runner-up honors in the 60m hurdles, and Torres was fourth in 8.98.

The Roadrunners will return to Yeoman Fieldhouse next Friday-Saturday, Jan. 25-26 for the Houston Invitational.
