Routsas named Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week

AUGUSTA, Ga. — UTSA senior Yannis Routsas has been named the Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week for his performance against Southern Miss last Saturday night, the Augusta Sports Council announced Thursday.

Routsas averaged 47.3 yards on nine punts in the 27-17 setback to the Golden Eagles in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Houston native pinned Southern Miss inside its own 20-yard line on six of his punts, including three inside the 10, and he did not have any sail into the end zone for a touchback. A member of the Ray Guy Award watch list and a semifinalist last year, he booted five consecutive punts of 50-or-more yards, including a long of 58 and another of 53 that helped lead to an interception return for a touchdown by C.J. Levine on the next play. His performance helped UTSA post a net punting average of 48.1 yards, as the punt coverage unit limited Southern Miss to four returns for minus-seven yards.

For the season, Routsas is averaging 43.4 yards on 50 punts with 18 inside the 20 — seven inside the 10 — and 14 of 50-plus yards, including a career long of 63. The Clear Brook High School product now owns a school-record 41.4 punting average, 80 punts inside the 20 and 40 of 50-or-more yards for his career.
