AUGUSTA, Ga. — UTSA senior Yannis Routsas has been added to the Ray Guy Award watch list, the Augusta Sports Council announced this week.
One of 10 semifinalists for the Ray Guy Award last season, Routsas has punted 16 times for an average of 42.3 yards per punt this season. The senior from Houston has pinned opponents inside their own 20-yard line three times and four of his punts have resulted in a fair catch. In the home opener against Baylor, he averaged 43.0 yards on five punts, including a career-long 63-yarder, the second-longest punt in school history. Routsas punted four times for a 43.8 average with one inside the 20 and one fair catch in his last outing at Kansas State.
The UTSA record holder for single-season (42.0/2016) and career (41.0) punting average and punts (195), Routsas has boomed four punts of 60-or-more yards, 27 of 50-plus yards, 65 inside the 20 and 63 that have induced a fair catch during his career.
About the Ray Guy Award
The Augusta Sports Council created the Ray Guy Award in 2000 to honor Thomson, Georgia native and College and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Ray Guy. Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage and percentage of punts not returned with particular emphasis placed on net punting average. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.
