SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA football team officially started its third fall camp under the direction of head coach Frank Wilson on Friday with a pair of split-squad practices on the UTSA Practice Fields.
The morning practice saw the veteran players go through a spirited two-hour workout in helmets. The newcomers went through their first official practice as Roadrunners in the afternoon.
"It was a good first day of practice," Wilson said. "We have guys vying for positions. There's competition all over the place and it's healthy competition. I think it's going to make our team better. With the split practices, we're able to have two guys per position and that allows for more reps as we grow this team and identify the cream that's going to rise to the top. All in all, it was a productive day."
UTSA will use the split-practice format for the next two days of practice before coming together as a full squad on Tuesday.
UTSA returns 36 letterwinners, including 12 starters (4 offense/6 defense/2 kickers) from last year's squad that finished with a 6-5 record. Included in that group are preseason All-Conference USA selections Kevin Strong Jr. (senior defensive lineman) and Josiah Tauaefa (junior linebacker).
