SAN MARCOS, Texas – UTSA track & field's Maia Campbell and John von Dohlen each claimed event wins to open the Texas State-hosted Bobcat Classic on Friday.
Throws
Campbell captured her first event win of the season as she claimed the hammer throw title. The sophomore threw a personal-best distance of 49.52m to best the 13-competitor field. The throw, which improved her PR by nearly nine meters, ranks fifth on the UTSA all-time list. Dallas O'Connell, a junior, placed sixth in the event with a best throw of 44.10m.
In the men's hammer Vincent Perez placed third with a hurl of 51.47m.
Jumps
Caroline Bellow tied for second in the women's pole vault with a cleared height of 3.75m. The height was a personal-best for the junior and ranks third in the UTSA annuals and seventh on Conference USA list. Britton Chapman finished eighth in the event with a height of 3.30m.
Kyle Real tied for second in the men's pole vault after clearing 4.64m on his third attempt at the height, while Alex Tyra made it over 4.34m to tie for seventh.
Distance
Von Dohlen, a senior, set a personal-record in the 3,000m steeplechase as he won the event with a time of 9:30.95. Sophomore Peter Sepulveda crossed the line in 9:56.87 to place fourth in the event.
Up next
The Bobcat Classic continues on Saturday. The field events action gets started at 11 a.m. with the women's discus and concludes with the men's shot put in the 4 p.m. hour. The track events open at 3 p.m. and continue through the day with the final event, the men's 4x400m relay, scheduled for 6:20 p.m.
