No. 17 Texas capitalizes on errors in 2-0 win over UTSA

AUSTIN – Seventeenth-ranked Texas scored two unearned runs and limited UTSA to one hit to collect a 2-0 victory on Tuesday night in front of 4,284 fans at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

Four Longhorn pitchers combined to neutralize the Roadrunner bats in the mid-week affair.

Nico O'Donnell (1-0) started the contest and pitched 4.2 hitless panels before Joshua Lamb grounded a single through the middle of the infield to break up the no-hit bid.

He handed the ball over to the bullpen in the sixth, which put up 3.2 scoreless to close out the shutout.

Nolan Kingham threw the ninth for Texas (5-3). After walking Ryan Stacy on five pitches, the right-hander induced a groundball for a 6-4-3 double play and then posted a strikeout to secure his first save of the season.

Jordan Rodriguez (0-1) was saddled with the loss for UTSA (2-5). The left-hander allowed two unearned runs on six hits and two walks over 4.2 stanzas. He also struck out a season-high three batters.

The Longhorns scored solo tallies in the both the first and fifth innings.

David Hamilton led off the bottom of the first with a bunt single, but Rodriguez's throw to first base sailed down the right-field line allowing the runner to move to second. Masen Hibbeler followed with a single to left that drove in Hamilton.

In the fifth, Hibbeler was issued a two-out walk by Rodriguez. Kody Clemens then hit a single to left field. As Clemens was attempting to stretch it for extra bases, the relay throw from Lamb was wide of second base, allowing Hibbeler to cross the plate.

Stacy was the lone Roadrunner to reach scoring position, which he did twice.

The Sugar Land native drew a one-out walk in the first inning. He then moved up to second on a groundout.

With one out in the sixth, Stacy struck out on a pitch in the dirt, but a wild pitch allowed him to reach first base. After a pitching change, he stole second base before the next two batters were retired.

The Roadrunners, who have lost four consecutive contests, will take Wednesday off before traveling to Lake Charles, La., on Thursday. UTSA is scheduled to open a three-game set against former Southland Conference foe McNeese State at 6 p.m. Friday at Joe Miller Ballpark.
