Gaines to play in SPIRAL Tropical Bowl

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — UTSA senior Nate Gaines will play in the SPIRAL Tropical Bowl, which is set for an 8 a.m. (CT) kickoff on Sunday, Jan. 14, at Daytona Beach Municipal Stadium.

Gaines, a free safety, earned honorable mention All-Conference USA accolades following a senior season that saw him record 41 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a team-high four interceptions. He was a key member of a defense that led C-USA in seven different statistical categories and currently ranks in the top 10 among all Football Bowl Subdivision teams in five. The Mesquite, Texas, native played in 44 career games with 34 starts and tallied 198 tackles, 5.5 TFLs, eight interceptions and 13 pass breakups. His four interceptions in 2017 tied the program's single-season record, while his 120 solo tackles and eight career picks each stand second all-time.

The SPIRAL Tropical Bowl showcases the top college football seniors to NFL scouts and GMs who travel from around the country to the event. The weekend is focused on scouting, teaching, and football. The SPIRAL Tropical Bowl has featured more than 70 NFL scouts and 26 NFL teams and more than 110 SPIRAL Tropical Bowl alumni have gone on to the NFL since its inception in 2016.
