LONG BEACH, Calif. — UTSA won five doubles matches at last weekend's season-opening Beach Winter Invitational. All five victories came on Saturday, which ended up being the only day of competition at the three-day tournament, as rain washed out action on both Friday and Sunday.
Kylee Kato and Miriam Rosell Canudas won two of their three doubles contests. The pair downed Long Beach State's Julie Gerard and Maeva Razakasoa and Utah State's Sabrina Demerath and Nini Guensler by identical scores of 6-4.
Meanwhile, Denisa Ibrahimovic and Sonia Madroñal Medina also were victorious twice, as they downed Cal State Northridge's Ki Kim and Emma Roenholt, 6-4, as well as the Long Beach State duo of Maran Helgo and Natalia Munoz, 7-5.
UTSA's other victory of the weekend came from Laura Cabrera and Charlene Tiwari, who downed Utah State's Ellee Bullock and Maggie O'Meara by a score of 6-3.
The Roadrunners did not win any of their six singles matches that were played on Saturday.
UTSA will begin its dual-match campaign on Saturday, Jan. 28, at home when it hosts McNeese State (1-2). First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the UTSA Tennis Center.
