Roadrunners fly past Cardinals in Friday afternoon sweep at Nike Invitational

NORMAN, Okla. — UTSA battled through in the second day of the Nike Invitational as the Roadrunners swept the Lamar Cardinals Friday afternoon at McCasland Field House.

UTSA (5-3) faced a tough Lamar team that saw the Roadrunners play from behind one time or another. Despite the hard-fought battle, UTSA posted its second best attack percentage of the season with a .324 clip and was led by the duo of Dajana Boskovic and Marijeta Runjic.

Boskovic paced the team with 15 kills and hit .353 with an ace and four digs, while Runjic matched a season best of 13 kills.

Meanwhile, Jessica Waldrip had another stellar performance with 33 helpers, seven digs and a pair of blocks, while Shelby Williams had another double-digit performance of 16 digs.

The Roadrunners opened the match with a close game against Lamar (0-8) that eventually saw UTSA pull away towards the end. After leading by no more than two points, the Roadrunners finally left the Cardinals in the dust with a seven-point lead at the 22-15 mark on a hitting error by LU. Boskovic ended the opening frame with just her fourth kill of the match.

Lamar gained some momentum after the opening set and even led the Roadrunners at the 15-13 mark forcing UTSA to take a timeout. The Roadrunners recovered after the 13th tie at 22-all as UTSA scored three of the last four points of the set.

The Cardinals came out fierce once again in the third set and started 5-2 before UTSA rallied back. After a tie at 7-all, both teams traded points before the Roadrunners could gain control of the set and get the sweep.

Chelsea Grant led the Cardinals with 14 kills and a .467 hitting percentage.

UTSA will conclude tournament play at 10 a.m. on Saturday against Ohio (3-5).
