DALLAS – UTSA hit a weekend-best .416 and held Montana to a .093 hitting percentage to cruise to a 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-14) victory over the Grizzlies and capture the SMU Doubletree Classic title Saturday.
UTSA (3-0) went undefeated during opening weekend for the second straight season after opening up the 2015 campaign 4-0 at the Bearkat Invitational.
Three Roadrunners were recognized on the all-tournament team with Dajana Boskovic earning MVP honors. The senior registered a pair of kills against the Grizzlies and added three digs on the final day.
Also recognized on the all-tournament team were Jessica Waldrip and Marijeta Runjic. The senior setter recorded a kill with 18 assists, three aces, four digs and a block. Meanwhile, Runjic posted a team-best 10 kills, four aces and four blocks.
The Roadrunners were limited on their errors Saturday as they posted a weekend-low six errors while Montana (1-2) totaled 20. The Grizzlies were led by Missy Huddleston as she registered 12 kills with six digs and a block.
UTSA made quick of its opponents in all three sets with the Grizzlies scoring a match-high 19 points in the second set. A serving error in both the first and second sets handed the Roadrunners the win after a serving error in the first gave UTSA set point and a kill by Brianna McCulloch in the second set gave the Roadrunners a 24-17 advantage.
The third set came easy to the Roadrunners. A strong start followed by a 6-1 run by UTSA gave the Roadrunners a 10-4 lead and forced Montana to call for a timeout. UTSA continued to play strong throughout the set and also saw Kasey Kiefer record six of her seven kills in the third frame.
The Roadrunners will return to the Alamo City on Tuesday, Aug. 30, for a 6 p.m. exhibition match against the Shandong (China) Junior Women's Provincial Team before heading to Austin next weekend for the American Campus Classic (Sept. 1-3).
