UTSA cruises to 69-43 exhibition victory against McMurry on Saturday

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA cruised to a 69-43 exhibition victory against McMurry on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

Scoring in double digits for the Roadrunners were Mathilde Hergott and Tesha Smith.

Hergott filled up the stat sheet with 15 points, five rebounds, four assists, a pair of blocks and one steal, while Smith chipped in with 11 points and eight boards off the bench.

UTSA shot 43.5 percent from the field after connecting on 27-for-62 shots, while the Roadrunners held the War Hawks to 31 percent shooting (15-for-48).

All three newcomers saw time on the hardwood for UTSA with Carlie Heineman seeing the most time with 19 minutes. The San Antonio product produced eight points, two rebounds, a block and one steal. Crystal Chidomere added nine points, three boards and two steals, while Pearl Johnson registered an assist and one rebound.

UTSA jumped out to a 25-16 halftime lead, as Hergott scored 11 of her 15 points.

With 4:36 on the clock, the Roadrunners held their largest lead of the half, 20, on a jumper by Haylee Beard. Both teams did reach a lull after the 8:57 mark with UTSA broke the silence on a Smith free throw.

The Roadrunners continued to stretch their lead in the second half, as it reached 30 on a layup by Niaga Mitchell-Cole.

McMurry had the hot hand late in the contest, as it scored on consecutive possessions to pull to withing 15 at 55-40.

Heineman scored from behind the arc on a pass from Johnson for the Roadrunners' final points of the tilt.

Taylor Neal led the War Hawks with 17 points.

UTSA will play its final exhibition game next Saturday, Nov. 8, against Howard Payne. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. at the Convo.
