CORPUS CHRISTI — Freshman Fabiola Arriaga and sophomore Paola Valerio both opened the Southland Conference Championship with 75s on Monday to pace the UTSA women's golf team.
The Roadrunners tallied a 306 despite playing in a 20 mile-per-hour wind throughout the day and they stand second on the team leaderboard. UTSA trails only Lamar, which opening the three-day tournament at Corpus Christi Country Club with a 297.
Arriaga carded a birdie on No. 7 and went out at one-over-par before a pair of bogeys on the back nine brought her to three over for the day. Meanwhile, bogeys on Nos. 2, 5 and 10 gave Valerio her opening-round 75. The pair is tied for sixth in the individual standings.
Junior Shannon Jungman is one shot back of her teammates and she sits in a tie for 10th place after a birdie on No. 8 brought her to a 76. Freshman Taylor Newlin (80) and junior Summer Batiste (81) ended the day in 20th and 25th, respectively.
Lamar's Stine Pedersen and Ashley Thorpe and Texas State's Mara Puisite sit atop the individual leaderboard at 73.
The continues at 8 a.m. on Tuesday and UTSA and Lamar will be paired together beginning at 10 a.m.
