SAN ANTONIO ? Senior guard Monica Gibbs poured in a
game-high 34 points to pace the UTSA women’s basketball team to an 81-64 exhibition
victory against the Dallas Diesel on Sunday at the Convocation Center.
Gibbs connected on 11 field goals, was 12-of-18
from the free throw line and also dished out
a game-best five assists.
Sophomore guard Amber Gregg chipped in with 14 points, while senior forward Onika Anderson added 11 and eight rebounds. Junior forward Valencia Cottom hauled in a team-high nine boards in her UTSA debut.
Chantoya Hawkins led the Diesel with a team-high 18
points, while Deneva Fogarty tallied a dozen.
UTSA exploded to a 14-point lead (47-33) within the
first four minutes of the second half, but Dallas cut
the deficit to seven on a three-point play by Hawkins
with 11:04 left. It would be the closest the Diesel would get the
reminder of the game.
The Roadrunners pushed their lead to 19on a pair of free throws by Cottom with 3:24 remaining. Natasha
Summerville’s 3-pointer pulled Dallas within 14 points at 67-53, but
UTSA was too much down the stretch and cruised to the 17-point triumph.
UTSA started off the game with an 8-2 spurt, but the Diesel grabbed their first
lead with a 9-2 run over the next three minutes.
Deneva Fogarty’s 3-pointer gave the Diesel their largest advantage of the frame, seven, with 11:09 left.
The Roadrunners responded with a 9-2 run to tie the contest at
25 with six minutes to play and closed out the frame with a
14-4 run, 10 of which came from Gibbs, for a 39-29 halftime lead.
UTSA closes out its preseason on Saturday, Nov. 8, against St. Edward’s at the Convo. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
