Jimenez wins mile, leads UTSA to 11th-place finish at Dan DeHart Invitational

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Senior Hope Jimenez won the mile to lead the UTSA women’s track & field team to an 11th-place showing at the Dan DeHart Invitational held Friday-Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Jimenez, an All-Southland Conference performer in cross country in the fall, clocked a 5:13.65 to beat Western State’s Elsa Goshu (5:15.23) by more than one second. The freshman duo of Dana Mecke (Bulverde/Smithson Valley HS) and Faith Barlow also scored points in the mile, placing third (5:18.46) and sixth (5:27.09), respectively.

Senior Diane Smith also stood out for the UTSA middle distance crew, finishing fourth in the 800 meters in 2:20.52. Senior Veronica Silva, the 2006 SLC Outdoor 800m champion, was 12th in 2:24.94.

Smith led off for the 4x400m relay team that finished fifth, joining junior Brittany Epps, freshman Jessica Jones and sophomore Ashley Jackson to clock a 3:51.85.

In other action, senior Lyndsey Sidney posted an 8.81 in the 60m hurdles prelims and went on to finish eighth in the final in 8.89.

With a partial squad competing, UTSA scored 29 points for 11th place in the 16-team field. Arizona won with 64.5 points, followed by Houston (63), Kansas State (61), California (58) and Arizona State (52).

The Roadrunners return to the track next Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Sooner Invitational in Norman, Okla.
