STILLWATER, OKLA. - With four runners finishing in the top 50, the UTSA women's cross country team ran to a strong eighth place finish at the 2005 Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree on Saturday morning at the OSU Cross Country Course. The Roadrunner men finished 21st.
Senior Rita Lambert (right) led the UTSA women by finishing 33rd with a time of 19:54 over the 5,000-meter race. She was followed closely by Hope Jimenez, who was 37th (20:05), while Karilyn Petty came in 45th (20:29), Veronica Silva was 48th (20:34). UTSA's fifth runner was Nicole Silvas, who finished 86th in a time of 21:40. UTSA's team total was 249. The women's race was captured by Oklahoma State with a team total of 41, followed by Wichita State with 61. Winning the individual title was Miriam Kaumba, who ran unattached in a time of 17:31.
UTSA's men had a team total of 560 points and were led by Cornelio Castanon, who finished 79th with a time of 27:41 over an 8k course. He was followed by Chris Layman in 100th place (28:04), Nick Perez in 105th (28:13), Michael Schwartz in 128th (28:50) and Justin Pitchford in 148th (29:48). The men's title was captured by Arkansas with a team total of 41, while Abilene Christian was second with 103 points. The individual title was won by Jasphat Boit of Arkansas in a time of 24:33.
The Roadrunners were returning from a two-week layoff due to the cancellation of the UTSA Invitational scheduled for last Friday, Sept. 23, because of Hurricane Rita. In their last meet - the Rice Invitational on Sept. 17 - the women finished third and the men placed fifth. At last year's Cowboy Jamboree, the women took 13th and the men were 18th in the toughest field of the season the Roadrunners faced.
Both UTSA teams will return to action on Oct. 17 at the Lamar Invitational in Beaumont.
