SAN ANTONIO — Sophomore Fabiola Arriaga carded an even-par 72 during Tuesday's final round of The Alamo Invitational to win the individual title and her performance helped lead UTSA to a three-shot victory at Briggs Ranch Golf Course.
“This was a true team win and those are the best kind,” head coach Carrie Parnaby said. “We have been waiting for a week like this to happen with Fabiola. She is so consistent and has such a great attitude. To see all of that come together at our home tournament is special and we are very proud of her.”
“It’s really hard to describe this feeling right now,” Arriaga said. “I was just trying to be patient and play it hole-by-hole and shot-by-shot. As a team, we work hard every day in practice and I think we’ll have more tournaments like this.”
The Torreon, Mexico, native finished with a three-under-par 213 (69-72-72), which bested her previous career low 54-hole total by nine strokes, and she won by three shots over a trio of players. Arriaga went out at four-over-par before firing four birdies on the back nine.
Senior Shannon Jungman recorded the third top-10 finish of her career with a 216 (73-69-74), which put her in a tie for fifth place. Her 54-hole round score also was a new personal best and was aided by birdies on Nos. 7, 8, 10 and 13. Her place on the leaderboard tied a career mark established at last year’s Southland Conference Championship.
Meanwhile, sophomore Taylor Newlin recorded her highest standing of the fall, 16th, with a 220 (76-74-70). The Frisco native's season-best scorecard was bolstered by four birdies in the final round.
Junior Paola Valerio, who wrapped up the tournament with a final-round 74, was one shot back of Newlin with her 221 (76-71-74) and that was good for 17th place.
Rounding out the scoring for UTSA was senior Summer Batiste, who fired a 223 (75-71-77) to finish in 26th place. It was her best 54-hole score since last year’s edition of this same tournament.
Sophomore Chelsea Bretcher was the top finisher among individual players with a 224 (73-78-73), which was good for 27th, and senior Bruna Spengler finished 75th with a 246 (80-81-85).
UTSA topped No. 23 Baylor (869=293-283-293) by three strokes for its fourth tournament championship in program history and they all have come under the direction of Parnaby.
The Roadrunners will be back in action from Nov. 7-8 at The Challenge at Onion Creek.
