NORMAN, Okla. — UTSA shot a 314 on Sunday and the Roadrunners are in 16th place after the first round of the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic, which is being played at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.

Sophomore Taylor Newlin led the way for the Roadrunners with a 75, which marked her lowest round of the fall. The Frisco native, who stands in 32nd place, opened her day on No. 10 and shot even par until a bogey on the 18th hole. She added a pair of birdies on Nos. 3 and 5 to climb to one-under before closing the round with four consecutive bogeys.

Fellow sophomore Fabiola Arriaga fired a 79, which is good for 64th on the individual leaderboard. Arriaga opened the day with a birdie on No. 10, but it proved to be her only one of the day.

Not far behind were seniors Summer Batiste and Shannon Jungman and junior Paola Valerio, who all shot opening-round 80s.

Florida State leads the field with a 284, while Texas Tech’s Kimberly Kaufman and Kennesaw State’s Ket Preamchuen sit atop the individual standings after shooting 68s.

The second round will tee off at 9 a.m. on Monday.
