Roadrunners in 10th place after opening round of season-opening UCF Challenge

SORRENTO, Fla. — UTSA shot a 299 on Sunday and stands in 10th place after the first round of play at the season-opening UCF Challenge.

The Roadrunners were led by sophomore Fabiola Arriaga, who carded a 74, which has her in a tie for 32nd place. The Torreon, Mexico, native recorded a pair of birdies and finished even-par on the front nine before two bogeys on the back for a plus-two total on the day.

Seniors Summer Batiste and Shannon Jungman and sophomore Taylor Newlin all finished one stroke behind their teammate and their 75s have them in a tie for 43rd.

Batiste and Jungman each holed three birdies during the opening round, while Newlin carded a pair on the day.

Junior Paola Valerio rounded out UTSA's scoring with a 78.

Just three strokes separate the top four teams, led by No. 20 Baylor’s 284. No. 3 Auburn (285), Augusta State (286), Tulane (287) and No. 27 South Carolina (290) round out the top five. On the individual ledger, Baylor's Haley Davis and Auburn’s Victoria Trapani each shot a 68 to share the lead.

The Roadrunners will continue play with another 18 holes beginning Monday morning.
