SPRING BRANCH — Junior Ryan Werre secured one of two available qualifying spots for the 87th U.S. Amateur Public Links (APL) Championships by finishing second at the USGA APL Qualifier on Monday at River Crossing Golf Club.
The Redcliff, Alberta, native carded a two-under-par 142 after firing a pair of 71s on the 6,838-yard, par 72 layout. The two-time All-Southland Conference performer finished the 36-hole event in a tie for second with Kalen Vos of Trinity University, but he rolled in a 25-foot birdie putt on the par-four 18th to edge Vos for the final qualifying spot.
Werre and Michael Kim, who won Monday’s Qualifier with a three-under 141 (72-79), now will advance to the U.S. APL Championship, which will be contested from July 9-14 at Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway, Utah.
The winner of that tournament receives a 10-year APL exemption, exemptions into the next two U.S. Amateurs, a three-year exemption from local U.S. Open qualifying (as an amateur) and a likely invitation to the 2013 Masters Tournament. For more information on the tournament, click here.
