INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA has released the latest Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) data and UTSA saw nine teams register a perfect score of 1,000 for the 2022-23 academic year.
The sports of women’s basketball, women’s cross country, men’s golf, women’s golf, soccer, softball, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s track & field all logged a perfect 1,000 APR for the 2022-23 year. Women's cross country and women's tennis each recorded a perfect APR for the third consecutive year, while women's basketball, men's golf, women's golf, soccer and men's tennis all posted a 1,000 for the second straight reporting period.
The nine teams with a perfect APR marks an increase from last year’s report that saw eight programs register a perfect APR, while it is a significant improvement from two years ago when three teams earned a 1,000 APR.
For the second straight year, women’s tennis recorded a perfect 1,000 multiyear rate in the latest report. Additionally, nine other programs posted a multiyear rate of 970 or above. Those sports are baseball (977), women’s basketball (988), women’s cross country (988), men’s golf (992), women’s golf (990), soccer (986), softball (979), men’s tennis (976) and women’s track & field (973). That also is an increase from the 2021-22 report that saw nine programs turn in an APR of at least 970.
This is the 20th anniversary of APR data collection. Each academic year, every Division I sports team’s APR is calculated using a simple and consistent formula. Scholarship student-athletes can earn one point for staying on course for a degree in their chosen major and one point for being retained (or graduating) at the end of each academic term. For schools that do not offer athletics scholarships, recruited student- athletes are tracked.
This is the third consecutive year of publicly reported APRs after a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, the Division I board approved the release of APR scores but voted to continue the suspension of program penalties. After further review, the Committee on Academics is not enforcing the loss of access to postseason competition for teams that have scored lower than 930. Instead, a conditional waiver is being offered this year due to lingering impacts of COVID-19.

The high marks are not limited to UTSA’s APR figures. Last fall, UTSA reported a department-record GSR of 89 percent, marking the ninth consecutive year the department has posted a GSR of 80 percent or better.
A total of 11 UTSA sports programs logged a GSR of 80 percent or better in the latest report. Four teams registered a perfect GSR in the latest report as men’s golf, softball, women’s tennis and volleyball all posted a 100 percent GSR. Additionally, the women’s basketball (93%) baseball (91%), women’s cross country/track & field (90%), football (89%), women’s soccer (88%), women’s golf (86%), men’s cross country/track & field (85%) each posted a GSR over 80 percent.
The latest report also saw UTSA establish new department standards for four-class average and single-year graduation rate.
