DENTON, Texas — Ekua Youri picked up her seventh singles victory of the season, but the No. 70 UTSA women’s tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to North Texas on Saturday afternoon at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
With the loss, the Roadrunners fell to 7-3 on the year, while the Mean Green improved to 7-5.
Youri defeated Carolina Laydner, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, on the fifth court to run her record to 7-2, including 5-1 at No. 5. However, that was the lone decision that went in favor of the Roadrunners in the first of three matches scheduled for the weekend.
UNT took a 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point. Olivia Malm and Stansilava Shulzhenk teamed up to beat the UTSA duo of Aleksandra Zlatarova and Magda Tuells on court one, 6-2. Stadfany Nformi and Lilly Schultz secured the early lead for the Mean Green with a 6-4 triumph over Cassie McLay and Fatima Gutierrez at No. 2.
In singles play, UNT upped its advantage to 2-0 after Stansilava Shulzhenk scored a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Vittoria Baccino at the third spot. Olivia Malm defeated Aleksandra Zlatarova, 6-2, 6-2, at the top of the lineup to pull the Mean Green within one point of clinching the match.
Youri’s three-set win at No. 5 made it 3-1. The three remaining singles contests also went to a third set, but UNT ended things when Stadfany Nformi outlasted Fatima Gutierrez on court two, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
The Roadrunners return to action on Sunday with a pair of neutral-site matchups, Tyler JC at 9 a.m. and Cowley CC at 1 p.m.
