UTSA hits the road to face UTEP & New Mexico State

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women's tennis team hits the road for another pair of matches, this time traveling to El Paso, Texas, and Las Cruces, N.M. The Roadrunners start the roadtrip in at UTEP on Friday at 12 p.m. (MT)/1 p.m. (CT), for their first Conference USA match of the season. The team then heads up the road to face New Mexico State on Saturday at 1 p.m. (MT)/2 p.m. (CT).
 
The Roadrunners have made significant progress in their first two matches. UTSA lost its season opener, 7-0, to TCU, but are currently coming off a close, well-battled 4-3 loss to ACU on Jan. 21. Three Roadrunners have one win in singles play each – Aleksandra Zlatarova, Alexandra Weir and Magda Tuells. Zlatarova has earned the No. 1 singles spot, while Weir is playing the second court and Tuells is playing No. 4. The duo of Zlatarova and freshman Fatima Gutierrez have a 1-1 record playing at the No. 1 doubles spot.  
 
The Miners have a 1-3 record to start the season, falling in their Wednesday match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 6-1. UTSA and UTEP last played each other on March 8, 2020, when the Roadrunners fell to the Miners, 4-1. UTEP's No. 1 player Veronika Lebisova has a 1-2 record so far, also putting together a 2-1 record at the first doubles spot with partner Thassane Abrahim.
 
The Aggies have a 1-2 record to begin the 2023 campaign, falling to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-3, on Tuesday. UTSA and New Mexico State last played each other on April 8, 2022, when the Roadrunners defeated the Aggies, 5-2. The Aggies have played both Anna Pinaieva (1-2) and Lisa Zhu (0-1) at the No. 1 singles spot. Together, they have a 1-1 record at the No. 1 doubles spot. 
 
UP NEXT: The Roadrunners have their first midweek match, facing Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday, Feb. 1, in Corpus Christi, Texas. First serve is set for 2 p.m. (CT).
