Women's Tennis opens 2020 spring season at Baylor Monday

SAN ANTONIO – The first serve of the 2020 UTSA women's tennis spring season is against Baylor at The Hurd Tennis Center in Waco at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
 
The Bears went 9-21 overall, including 2-7 in Big 12 play but are just outside the top 25 in the latest poll. They opened 2020 with a 7-0 victory over Georgia State Friday and host McNeese State at 11 a.m. Monday.
 
Under the direction of first-year head coach Ki Kroll, the Roadrunners posted a 12-13 mark in 2019 just 2-10 on the road.
 
Seniors Laura Cabrera (Barcelona, Spain), Kylee Kato (Kahului, Hawaii) and Diya Menon (Plano, Texas) will lead and mentor a young squad.
 
Sophie Omoworare (Plano, Texas), Catalina Cabrique (Bogata, Columbia) and Jasmin Starr (Victoria, Australia) return for their sophomore campaigns. They are joined by newcomers Keegan McCain (Austin, Texas) and Laura Munoz-Baroja (San Sebastián, Spain).
 
Cabrera and Starr led the team with 12 wins each last season. Starr appeared in the No. 1 position for all 23 matches, notching a 12-11 mark and defeating one nationally ranked opponent. Cabrera went 12-10 overall with a 9-6 mark at the No. 2 singles position and 3-4 at No. 3.
 
Kato went 11-8 in 2019, finishing 5-5 at the No. 3 slot and 6-3 as the No. 4.
 
Omoworare appeared in 15 matches, going 2-4 as the No. 5 and 3-6 at No. 6.
 
Cabrique was the most versatile, starting in three of the six positions, going 1-0 as No. 3, 1-4 at No. 5 and 3-1 as the No. 6.
 
Menon tallied a 2-2 mark as the No. 6.


UTSA opens the spring with a four-match road trip. The Roadrunners visit Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Jan. 30, UIW Feb. 2 and UT Arlington Feb. 8, before hosting Sam Houston State Feb. 14 and UTRGV Feb. 15.
