Softball signs eight to 2020 class

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team added eight signees to the 2020 signing class announced by head coach Michelle Cheatham.
 
Lourdes Bacon
Position: Outfielder
Hometown: San Antonio, Texas
High school: East Central HS
 
Quote from head coach Michelle Cheatham on Bacon: "Lourdes is the definition of athleticism and tenacity. You can't help but feel the level of excitement that her attitude and style of play brings to the ballfield day in and day out. She decided early on in the recruiting process that UTSA was the place where she could become the student-athlete that she aspires to be, and I am thrilled to be able to be a part of that journey."
 
Bio: A four-time varsity player for East Central High School, Lourdes Bacon won Newcomer of the Year and All-District MVP in 2017. She was also a three-time academic all-district honoree, as well as a three-time first team all-district outfield member. In 2018, Bacon won MVP for her high school and in 2019, she won Defensive Player of the Year. She helped her team to bi-district qualifiers in 2017 and 2018 and was named the bi-district champion in 2017.
 


Sydney Blakeman
Position: Outfielder
Hometown: Katy, Texas
High school: Katy HS
 
Quote from head coach Michelle Cheatham on Blakeman: "Coming from a state championship program at Katy High School and a top notch club program, Syd knows what it takes to compete at a high level. She adds another left-handed bat to our roster in the outfield and brings with her a competitive drive and personality that I am looking forward to coaching through her college career."
 
Bio: Sydney Blakeman has played varsity softball all four years of her high school career. In the 2017-18 season, she spent a semester playing in South Dakota and won Rapid City Stevens High School Offensive MVP, first team all-state, first team all-tournament and finished fourth at the state tournament. In 2018-19, Blakeman won second team all-district honors for Katy High School and helped them win a state championship. She was also a Region 3 finalist in 2016 and 2017.
 


Julia Bumford
Position: Infielder/Outfielder
Hometown: Prosper, Texas
High school: Prosper HS
 
Quote from head coach Michelle Cheatham on Bumford: "Julia is a steadfast corner infielder that will add to our power options offensively. She is a tough player that bleeds orange and blue. We are immensely elated that she chose UTSA as the place for her to grow and succeed as a student-athlete."
 
Bio: Julia Bumford was a four-year varsity softball player for Prosper High School. She was a two-time first team academic all-district, two-time first team all-district, first team all-state and was named the team Offensive MVP for two straight years. Bumford also led her team in home runs and doubles as a freshman and sophomore. She and her team her named 5A Region II area champions in 2017 and 2018 and were the 2018 5A Region II District 14 champions.
 


Jamie Gilbert
Position: Pitcher
Hometown: La Vernia, Texas
High school: La Vernia HS
 
Quote from head coach Michelle Cheatham on Gilbert: "Jamie's story is a special one in the sense that we both have faith in the fact that she was fated to be a Roadrunner. We believe that she already possesses many natural abilities in the circle that will translate directly to success at this level very quickly. She has a fantastic character that will continue to lay the foundation of what it means to be a Roadrunner softball player."
 
Bio: A four-time letter winner for La Vernia High School, Jamie Gilbert contributed a lot throughout her high school career. Gilbert was a two-time academic all-district winner in 2017 and 2018, as well as first-team all-district pitcher in 2017. In the 2018-19 season, Jamie won District Co-MVP, All Area Sub 5A MVP, All Area Super Team Utility Player and TWSA all-state first team. She also helped her team reach bi-district qualifiers three years in a row and is a three-time district champion.
 


Erykah Guerrero
Position: Catcher
Hometown: San Antonio, Texas
High school: Business Careers HS
 
Quote from head coach Michelle Cheatham on Guerrero: "A hometown kid from Holmes High School that has been wanting to officially make UTSA her home for a while now. Everyone knows I love a good catcher behind the dish and she is bringing some skills that I am excited to work with. She has tremendous offensive power at the plate that sets her up to be a name everyone knows in the region at the next level."
 
Bio: Guerrero played all four years on her varsity softball team at catcher. She earned first team all-district all three years, as well as second team academic. Guerrero was named the Newcomer of the Year after her freshman season. She and her team were to-time district champions, three-time bi-district champions and two-time area champions.
 


Kat Ibarra
Position: Infielder
Hometown: Fulshear, Texas 
High school: Tompkins HS
 
Quote from head coach Michelle Cheatham on Ibarra: "Kat is a dynamic player that adds some versatility and another left-handed stick in the lineup for our program. Her ability to play multiple positions is a tribute to her athleticism and hard work. She is a heady player and someone that is ready to come in and make an impact immediately."
 
Bio: A three-sport athlete in high school, Kat Ibarra ran track and cross country in 2016-17 and played varsity softball all four years. Throughout her softball career, she was a two-time second team all-district honoree, first team all-district member and the 2017 Defensive MVP. Ibarra and her team were also three-time Region 3 6A bi-district champions, area champions, regional qualifiers and the 2019 regional quarterfinal champions. She was also named all-state athlete in cross country, along with being named the district and regional champions.
 


Tatum Sieth
Position: Pitcher/Outfielder
Hometown: Hewitt, Texas
High school: Midway HS
 
Quote from head coach Michelle Cheatham on Seith: "Tatum is another one of our special additions in the circle for the 2020 class. Her ability to mix planes and speeds gives her a deceptive quality that gets a lot of swings and misses. She is an essential addition to the core of the pitching staff in her class."
 
Bio: Tatum Sieth was a four-year varsity player for Midway High School, earning academic all-district honors three of the years she attended Midway. Along with academic honors, Tatum made the first team all-district team as an outfielder in 2019, as well as the second team all-district team as a pitcher in 2018. Sieth also helped her team win a bi-district championship all three year, as well as area champs and regional quarter finalists in 2017 and 2019.
 


Alexa Williams
Position: Pitcher
Hometown: Lincoln, Neb.
High school: Lincoln Northeast HS
 
Quote from head coach Michelle Cheatham on Williams: "Many people will wonder why we have a player coming all the way from Nebraska to UTSA, but the minute they see Alexa on the mound it will be clear why she is an integral addition to this class. She commands the circle and is also another left-handed option for us at the plate. After one visit to San Antonio and our campus, she knew she could make this her home for her playing career and we couldn't be more excited to have her in the Roadrunner family."
 
Bio: Alexa Williams played varsity softball all four years at Lincoln Northeast and broke multiple records throughout her career. Williams broke the single-season home run and career homerun record in 2017 with 10 and 22, respectively, only to break her own record in 2019. She now holds the school record in RBIs (50), single-season home runs (16) and home runs in a career (38).
