SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will look to carry the momentum from consecutive Southland Conference home sweeps into this weekend's regular season-ending three-game series at Central Arkansas. The set is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at UCA Field, with Friday's middle contest slated for the same start time. The finale will be played at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
The Roadrunners (20-27, 11-19 SLC) are in the midst of a season-best six-game winning streak by virtue of their back-to-back series sweeps of Nicholls and McNeese State the last two weekends at the Bird Bath. UTSA is two games behind the Colonels (13-17 SLC) for the eighth and final spot in next week's Southland Tournament, which is scheduled to be played from May 26-29 at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi.
Reigning Southland Hitter of the Week Ryan Hutson is in the middle of yet another late-season surge at the plate. The junior second baseman, who is hitting a team-best .360 on the season with 14 home runs and 42 RBIs, has pushed his career homers total to 38 and that is tied with Michael Rockett (2006-09) for third place on the program’s all-time list. He enters the final weekend of the regular season riding an eight-game hitting streak in which he is 20-for-32 (.625 BA) with four long balls and nine RBIs.
The Birds appear to be peaking at the right time, but they will have their hands full with a Central Arkansas squad that is coming off one of its biggest series victories since entering the league four years ago.
The Bears (18-33-1, 9-20-1 SLC) officially were eliminated from tournament contention last weekend, but they recorded a sweep at Sam Houston State that saw them outscore the Bearkats by a score of 23-10. UCA saw the three-game winning streak come to an end with its 13-5 setback at Louisiana Tech on Tuesday night.
