Chovanec, Rockett earn CoSIDA Academic All-District honors

SAN ANTONIO ? UTSA senior pitcher Bradley Chovanec and junior center fielder Michael Rockett earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 6 honors, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced on Thursday.

Chovanec was one of two pitchers named to the first team and he now is eligible for the Academic All-America ballot. The Burton native maintains a 3.89 grade-point average (gpa) in kinesiology and is scheduled to graduate this weekend. He leads the Southland Conference with three complete games and a pair of shutouts this season and also ranks second with his 7-3 record and 79.1 innings pitched. Chovanec, who has four quality starts in 11 assignments this year, owns a 4.88 ERA in 13 appearances and has struck out 48 and walked just 15 hitters. He was named SLC Pitcher of the Week on April 7 following his four-hit shutout at Southeastern Louisiana two days prior.

Rockett, meanwhile, owns a 3.22 gpa in business. The Sugar Land native leads a Roadrunners offense that ranks among the best in the country. He is hitting a team-best .376 with a UTSA single-seasonrecord-tying 23 doubles, which stands second in the nation, and five triples. The DickHowser Trophy candidate (nation's top player) has hit seven home runs, recorded 61 RBIs and stolen eight bases in addition to makingseveral highlight-reel catches this season. Rockett also leads the club in hits (76), multi-hit games (23), multi-RBI contests (16), total bases (130), slugging percentage (.644) and outfield assists (five). He earned Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honors on March 3 after hitting for the second cycle in school history in just four innings on March 1 against Sacred Heart.

To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or importantreserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative gpa for his career and no athlete is eligible until he hasreached sophomore athletics and academic standing at his currentinstitution.

UTSA (34-14, SLC-leading 18-6) returns to action on Friday night when it begins a five-game home stand against Nicholls State (9-39, 4-20 SLC). First pitch in the weekend three-game series is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Roadrunner Field.
