FRISCO -- Senior right-hander Bradley Chovanec was named Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Chovanec was outstanding on Saturday at Southeastern Louisiana, as he tossed his second consecutive complete game (third of year) and second shutout of the season in a 4-0 victory. The Burton native allowed just four hits, all singles, walked one and struck out two in the 101-pitch masterpiece. He retired 10 in a row from the fourth through seventh innings and 16 of the final 18 of the game (including the final six).
Chovanec, who has allowed just one earned run over his last 18 innings of work, now has an SLC-best six wins this year to go with a 3.30 ERA. He also leads the league with 57.1 innings, three complete games and a pair of shutouts. The 6-foot-4 right-hander owns a 38-to-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio this year in nine appearances (eight starts).
UTSA returns to action on Friday when it travels to Natchitoches, La., for a three-game series at Northwestern State (17-11, 9-2 SLC).
