Calhoon named SLC Pitcher of the Week late Monday night

Zach Calhoon

FRISCO — UTSA true freshman reliever Zach Calhoon was named Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced late Monday night. It is the first weekly award for a Roadrunner this season.

Calhoon was solid in his two appearances out of the bullpen last week. The right-hander collected a win and a save in pitching 5.1 scoreless innings. He allowed just three hits and a pair of walks, while striking out seven.

In Tuesday's 4-3 come-from-behind victory against Houston, the Spring native kept UTSA close by striking out a career-high five in 4.2 scoreless innings. He retired the side in both the eighth and ninth to earn his first collegiate victory.

On Friday against Stephen F. Austin, Calhoon pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to collect his second save of the year. He entered the game with runners on first and second and, after walking the first hitter he faced, went on to punch out the next two batters to clinch the victory.

UTSA (4-9) is back in action on Friday when it begins a three-game series against the College of Charleston (11-1) at Wolff Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
