SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA baseball team picked up its fourth 30-win season in school history with a twinbill sweep of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon at Roadrunner Field. The last time the Roadrunners won 30 games in a season was in head coach Sherman Corbett’s first season at UTSA, in 2001.

UTSA, winners of five in row, improved its overall record to 31-14, while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi dropped to 20-29 on the year. Game two was scheduled for nine innings, but was called off in the seventh due to inclement weather.

Freshman Andy Benedict picked up his second win on the year and improved to 2-0. He went five strong innings, allowed three runs, scattered six hits and fanned a career-high eight batters. Game two starter sophomore Mark Ruffin collected his third win and upped his mark to 3-1 on the season. Ruffin tossed six innings, gave up five runs off seven hits, walked two and struck out three.

Senior Lee Todesco (right) went 5-for-7 on the day, collected seven RBI, including a career-high six in one game, scored three times and went deep twice. Senior J.R. Voyles had a 4-for-7 day, with four RBI, four runs scored and a home run. Junior Michael McKennon collected five hits in seven at-bats, drove in two runs and scored four times.

The second game saw TAMU-CC jump to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Senior Ruben Munoz started off with a single, then a sacrifice bunt advanced Munoz to second. Senior Clint Galloway’s RBI single up the middle brought home the Islanders first run. The second run came in when Ruffin walk senior Todd Hawpe with bases loaded.

Down 2-0, UTSA responded with four runs off four hits in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Marshal Davis and McKennon began the inning with back-to-back singles. Todesco’s single pushed the first run across and an error by the Islanders allowed for McKennon to score from second and tie the game at 2-2. Freshman Michael Rockett’s doubled to right field gave the Runners the 4-2 lead.

The Islanders knotted the game at 4-all in the top of the third with two runs when Galloway smacked his ninth home run of the season. TAMU-CC broke the tie in the fourth frame, when Mercado’s single up the middle scored senior Jemery Molina, who reached base via a single. However, the Runners regained the lead courtesy of Voyles’ two-run shot over the left field wall, which made the score 6-5.

Todesco put on a hitting display in the fifth inning with a towering blast over left center field, then again in the bottom half of the sixth with his second home run of the day. Todesco’s second jack was a three-run homer, pushing UTSA’s lead to 11-5. The game was called off in the seventh due to inclement weather.
